The historic El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, CA has installed Apogee’s Big Ben to be the master clock to the Yamaha PM5D, located at the front of house. The El Rey installed the PM5D in January of 2007 when the theatre was fully renovated and Big Ben has been its companion ever since.

Apogee’s Big Ben is a master sync clock known for its stability and sound enhancement in the studio but has been popping up in many live sound scenarios. When connected to a digital console via its word clock connections, Big Ben improves many characteristics of the overall sound including a wider stereo image, more responsive EQ, tighter low end, and smoother high end.

Brian Haught, staff sound engineer at the El Rey describes why they chose Big Ben, “We rely on the digital console to facilitate the many scenarios we find here at the El Rey. What Big Ben has been doing is making the console smoother and more present so it doesn’t sound as digital.” Haught continues, “I do festivals that have the digital console by itself but clarity has always been an issue. Once we installed Big Ben at the El Rey, I noticed the change in clarity was dramatic, especially in large mixes.”
